Theatre goers treat in 2011

Theatre lovers will be treated to the presentation of the Adam Grossetti play “Mano Nera” directed by the widely acclaimed and talented Jack Haywood. Jack, a local icon in Port Douglas has co-written and directed many historically significant productions such as The Amalgamation Play dealing with the recent Cairns regional council amalgamation with the Port Douglas shire. He also entertained us with the production of Too Good to be True – based on the building of the 5 star resort and Marina Mirage development by Christopher & Pixie Scase.

Mano Nero is set in Far North Queensland and deals with the issues faced by Italian immigrant cane farming communities not only from Australian farmers and townsfolk, but from elements within their own community who attempt to extort payments from farming families.

Mano Nera is an historically significant play that tells an important story about the impact of Italian immigration in Far North Queensland. The play is based in fact; many of issues raised happened as stated (although dramatised for added impact.)

It is intended to inform and educate theatre goers, while providing an entertaining spectacle, about the important impact Italian immigration had on Far North Queensland and the developement of the modern Australian cane industry.

The play will open in mid June 2011- dates be advised.

Carnivale Wonderland

Every year for 10 days in May, Port Douglas celebrates the opening of the tourist season. Carnivale commences on the 19th May with the annual street parade – floats, dancers, a marching band, fire twirlers and chainsaw jugglers are just a sample of the entertainment appearing in the past few years.

Carnivale is all about cuisine, culture and sporting events. The main events include the the Mascarade Cocktail Party at the sugar wharf, the Food and Wine Festival – 2000 people tasting food & wine with music and dancing among the palm trees in the park. On the final Sunday of Carnivale a Seafood Extravaganza is held at the marina - local restaurants and fishing boats tempt your taste buds with lashings of fresh and cooked seafood. At the family Beach Day competitors will amaze you with their sandcastle building prowess – join in and express your creativity or enter a team in the Beach cricket competition if you feel like being a little more active. Gourmet gladiators, Art Shows, buskers, a Tennis tournament and a Songwriters competition are a few of the activities which continue throughout the 10 days until the 29th May.

The theme for 2011 will be Wonderland – people attending the many events can dress in themed costumes, why not get together with your friends and buy a table at the Food and Wine festival and decorate it as the mad hatters tea party or Michael Jacksons Wonderland – you are limited only by your imagination.

Self Contained Port Douglas Villas – Perfect Location

Excellent well maintained apartments close to beach and town – love the Qld/tropic style architecture of the villa. Small courtyard off living area giving kids some space to move and a nice eat outdoors option. Quiet end of town, but within walking distance of everything, esp. the beach.

Only needed a car for a couple of days ’cause could walk everywhere within Port Douglas. Beautiful hosts Toni and Bruno made it a lovely stay and had some great local recommendations. Take me back….

Highly Recommended Port Douglas Accommodation

Can’t recommend the Coral Sea Villas Port Douglas enough.
The location is fantastic – at the end of the main street right in the heart of town and about 1 min walk to the beach. The main street is quite small, so it takes just a minute to get to the shops…but the town is so small and quiet that it’s as quiet at the apartments as though you were in the suburbs.

The standard of the Port Douglas Apartments is very good – clean and stylish in a comfortable way. Ours had a twin room downstairs with a tv and dvd player.

There’s a bathroom on the first floor along with an open planned kitchen, dining area and living room. There’s a lovely balcony to sit out on in nice weather.

Upstairs is a loft bedroom with a huge double bed and en suite.
All fabulous.

The pool is also great and was always clean and a good temperature and there’s an outside bbq which was very fun.
Toni and Bruno who run the place are lovely and very helpful and welcoming.

I’d love to go back and would definitely stay here again if I could.
